Literacy NRV

Literacy NRV's mission is to foster, support, advocate for, and instruct adults in the New River Valley who seek opportunities to achieve greater independence through literacy.

Services are provided to help adults improve basic skills to achieve personal, employment, and civic goals. We provide instruction in reading, writing, math, and GED preparation; English for Speakers of Other Languages and U.S. Citizenship test preparation; digital literacy; financial literacy; family literacy; and health literacy.

:

Led by volunteer tutors and instructors, programs are delivered in various formats with one-to-one and small group tutoring or classroom-based instruction. We serve about 325 adults per year and are supported by about 100 active volunteers.

Beans and Rice

For the last 26 years, Beans and Rice has worked to improve the lives of low to moderate-income individuals and families in our area by working in three main areas:
1) Food Security,
2) Family Stability, and
3) Youth Development.
Our work includes activities such as Tuesday food distribution at our Radford office, MicroSolutions technical assistance for business startups, Micro Credit and Loan programs, academic enrichment programs and summer camp experiences for elementary and middle school youth, and internships and volunteer experiences for local and visiting high school and college students.

The Mayapple School

Mayapple is a non-profit preschool, unique in that it's curriculum consists primarily on outdoor learning. Mayapple preschoolers and teachers aren't detoured by weather. Melissa West, founder and head teacher, uses it to the advantage of learning. she's known to stomp in the mud puddles with the students. Please read about the school at www.mayapple.org. The pictures of the students speak volumes and the explanation of their tuition can be perused.

In Mayapple's success as a preschool has brought in many more students to a point of creating a waiting list. They want to be able to accommodate so many more and that can happen with the retrofitting of their location. It will also open the possibilities for more summer camps which extend into higher age levels. Their new location has a list of needs to accommodate the usage and requirements by the city, but once done, it's return to the community will be larger.
