Local Charitable Organizations Highlight - October 2020
The New River Valley Glean Team is a volunteer-led, secular project of St. Mary’s Catholic Church that grows, gleans, and purchases over 100,000 lbs. of nutritious fresh foods each year, about 300,000 servings. The Glean Team works with 34 food providers in the NRV and uses grants and gifts to provide over $200,000 worth of food through a network of 230 volunteers from civic groups, multiple churches, and universities providing over 1,500 hours of service. The 100+ WWC NRV donation will be used to purchase equipment and supplies to better provide food in 2021 and beyond. Tractors, implements, a hoop house, landscape fabric, and row covers will enable better garden preparation, a longer growing season, higher production, and decrease loss to insects and disease. Improvements in growing led to a doubling of production in 2020 in response to the pandemic needs. A further increase is expected using the gift from the 100+ WWC NRV in 2021.

Montgomery Co. Emergency Assistance Program (MCEAP)
MCEAP is a 100% volunteer-run organization with zero overhead cost that strongly believes in providing a hand up instead of a handout. MCEAP is seeing increasing requests for food, rent, utilities, and mortgage as many of those in need have not managed well during the pandemic’s job losses and the continuing/ongoing need for electricity and food. The MCEAP office is not open for one-on-one screenings due to Covid, so all business is being conducted by phone. Food pick-ups are by appointment only, and the person in the office packs about $250 in food in bags and leaves the bags outside under a tent at the back door for clients to pick up. This process satisfies the “no-touch” restriction.

College Mentors for Kids is a youth-mentoring nonprofit organization that serves about 200 elementary school students in Montgomery County Public Schools. These elementary schoolers, or “little buddies,” come from Margaret Beeks, Falling Branch, Belview, Prices Fork, and Eastern Montgomery Elementary Schools and are each paired 1-on-1 with a college student mentor from either Radford University or Virginia Tech, bridging the gap for low-income children. As College Mentors for Kids navigate school closures and visitor restrictions due to the Covid-19, they will provide a virtual model where their traditional model is not possible. This will include both time with their mentor in a group setting, College Mentors at Home, and time hosted by college student leaders for all, sharing an activity on their campus, College Mentors Live.
