Local Charitable Organizations Highlight - April 2024

From the Director: "I am so pleased with the recognition from 100+ Women Who Care–in addition to your financial support. This award helps me build a stronger network of women dedicated to their communities and skilled in the ways of small nonprofits, my new world!"

"Once the need for the Imagination Library was brought to my attention, I formed a 501(c)3, something I had never done before; and then raised money, which was also new to me. Only then could we enroll children. In seven weeks we have enrolled almost 1100 children. We have a great team drawn largely from the Mt. Tabor Ruritan Club. It is so gratifying to see the interest in this program and support for it. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library (of which the Imagination Library of Montgomery County is an affiliate) is such an amazing book gifting program for young children."

"By getting free, high-quality, age-appropriate books mailed to children from birth to age five sets the stage not just for literacy, but to help them develop a love of reading, a key pillar of education and democracy. New River Historical Society

The Wilderness Road Regional Museum is located in the historic village of Newbern, Virginia. Our mission is to preserve and present the historical and cultural heritage of Pulaski County and the New River Valley.

The museum is owned and operated by the New River Historical Society, and functions as a volunteer, non-profit organization. Through exhibits, living history events, and guided tours, our museum tells the story of early settlement, of westward expansion and commerce, and of Appalachian domestic and farm life. We also serve as the depository of a large number of archived items used for research. We believe that a community needs to understand its past and its own unique character.

We are fortunate to have historian April Martin as our Program Director. Under her direction our programs have flourished, the number of visitors has increased. In addition, Wilderness Road Regional Museum has an active presence on social media and has received several awards and positive publicity. The museum has had a pivotal part in the placement of historical signage in the county.

The programs, events, and activities delivered by the Wilderness Road Regional Museum provide educational experiences for adults and students in the Pulaski County community. For students in the community, we have Humpday History classes, summer history camps, as well as numerous tours and activities for school groups.

Our Heritage Workshops keep traditional Appalachian skills alive such as blacksmithing and chair caning. Seasonal events such as a Fall Harvest Festival, Spirit Nights, Noel Nights, and Old Christmas have been very well received by the residents of Pulaski County and the wider New River Valley region and have been a unique enhancement to the lives of residents.

Blue Ridge Vocal Connection

BRVC exists to spread the art and love of singing as widely as possible. Our mission is to help people come together and just enjoy music and each other’s company. We sing together because we appreciate the joy and art of choral singing. We perpetuate the love of singing together and fellowship in our community by creating rehearsals and performing concerts that inspire and entertain.

Our members are our first “constituency”. We offer every New River Valley resident an opportunity to discover and develop their vocal potential, without requiring an audition.

Our concerts are free so we can share the results of those efforts with as many of our family & friends as possible. We’ve already performed at Warm Hearth, The Lyric, Hotel Roanoke, Primland Resort (Meadows of Dan), Sinkland Farms (Riner), St Thomas Episcopal Church (Christiansburg), Blacksburg’s July 4th Celebration, Steppin’ Out (Blacksburg), Northside Presbyterian Church (Blacksburg], and Biltmore House (Asheville, NC). But some of our most gratifying performances have been at South Roanoke Nursing Home & Richfield Living in Salem. Over 400 people hear us each year.

Our financial support comes mostly from member dues and donations, with some performance fees as well. We also help people who want to learn to sing by holding music workshops, both for vocal improvement, but also to learn how to read music.

Choirs offer a sense of community and belonging in an inclusive and welcoming environment. No matter where we sing, our mission remains the same. We bring people together through music.
