Valley Interfaith Child Care Center

Valley Interfaith Child Care Center (VICCC) believes that a successful society values all its members, and gives special care to the youngest and poorest. Since 2003, VICCC has offered affordable, high quality, center-based child care for the children of local low-income working families. They emphasize "Safety, Love, and Learning", and their goal is to have VICCC children as ready for kindergarten--and for life--as children from the most privileged families. Their success is measured both long-term and daily. So many avoidable social ills--delinquency, teen pregnancy, dropping out of school--can be minimized in the future if we give young children a caring and loving start in life today. But this success is also visible daily, in the happiness of the hundreds of children for whom VICCC has cared, and in the words of the working parents who regularly say, "I don't know what I would have done without VICCC".
The Secular Society will provide VICCC with a matching grant this quarter!

16 Frogs

The 16 Frogs project is a public arts and environmental education campaign that seeks to restore the health of Stroubles Creek, the broader watershed, and the water quality of downstream communities through increased public awareness. Sixteen bronze frog statues are placed strategically through downtown and the surrounding area to call attention to the freshwater under and around the streets and buildings of Blacksburg. Each frog has been given a name associated with an important figure in Blacksburg’s history. The frogs are modeled after native Green Frogs, range from 6-12” in size, and are poised on culverts, stormwater drains, sidewalks and kneewalls. The 16 Frogs Committee is made up of local volunteers and Town of Blacksburg employees who are developing educational and promotional materials for youth and adult audiences alike to make town residents and visitors aware of the frogs and their connection to our local water resources. A volunteer citizens’ panel guides 16 Frogs. The Town of Blacksburg oversaw the installation of the statues, and Downtown Blacksburg, Inc. acts as their steward.

Literacy Volunteers of the NRV

With the help of more than 160 volunteers, our adult neighbors change their lives by increasing basic skills in reading, writing, math, computers, and English. We offer a broad array of basic educational services to respond to the needs of the community. It’s anticipated that COVID-19’s upending of the economy will create a major increase in the need for basic education services from NRV adults who need literacy, language, and digital skills now more than ever to understand critical health information, to access community resources when they need help, to obtain basic skills or a GED to secure employment, to combat social isolation, to perform an online job search, to help their children with schoolwork, and to participate in this new virtual world. In lieu of a multitude of anticipated hits to our projected revenue streams, Literacy Volunteers of the NRV is seeking financial contributions to support operations to sustain us during this difficult time, serve those who need us, and ensure we are there for our community to assist with recovery. For more information on LVNRV or to make a donation to change lives through literacy, please visit www.lvnrv.org.
